ENDOPROTHETICS (JOINT REPLACEMENT)

ARTHROPLASTY MUNICH - ARTIFICIAL REPLACEMENT FOR DAMAGED JOINTS

The replacement of a damaged joint with a prosthesis falls under the term “arthroplasty” – this offers many possibilities in the field of artificial joint replacement. This makes it possible to gently and successfully replace joints affected by osteoarthritis. In this way, affected patients become mobile again and regain their activity and an improved quality of life.

As renowned physicians, Prof. Dr Gollwitzer and Prof. Dr Weber have many years of experience in customised knee joint replacement and minimally invasive and muscle-sparing hip joint replacement (AMIS). Prof Dr Harrasser∗ is a foot specialist with many years of experience in the treatment of arthrosis of the foot and ankle joints.

WHAT EXACTLY IS ARTHROPLASTY?

Endoprothetics refers to various methods of replacing diseased, arthritic joints with artificial prostheses. One aim is to restore the patient’s mobility as quickly as possible and eliminate pain.

WHICH JOINTS CAN BE REPLACED BY ARTHROPLASTY?

Hip, knee and ankle joints are replaced with artificial joints as part of arthroplasty. Modern surgical techniques and implants make it possible to restore the natural anatomy and function of damaged joints in a very natural way. The further development of implant materials has also meant that the artificial joints can be expected to last a long time.

Even in cases of wear and complications with existing prostheses, replacement surgery is possible in the hip, knee and ankle joint area.

There are significant special features depending on the joint to be replaced. For example, the hip joint lies very deep in the body and is surrounded by a strong muscle sheath. It is therefore particularly important to insert an artificial hip joint in a way that is extremely gentle on the muscles, as is done by our specialists using the minimally invasive AMIS technique.

The knee joint, on the other hand, is an anatomically and functionally very complex joint. In order to achieve a high level of satisfaction, the implantation of the prosthesis must be customised to the patient’s individual anatomical conditions and ligament tension. Mako Smart Robotics technology supports the surgeon by combining 3-dimensional bone CT data with intraoperatively recorded soft tissue tension and high-precision robotic arm-assisted saw cuts.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT PROCEDURE FOR ARTHROPLASTY?

Different procedures are possible depending on the respective method and, of course, the area of application, whether hip, knee or ankle. What all therapies have in common is detailed information and advice from our specialists as well as detailed and precise planning of the joint replacement with the help of state-of-the-art technologies. Our specialists Prof Dr Gollwitzer, Prof Dr Weber and Prof Dr Harrasser∗ will discuss the exact procedure for your individual arthroplasty with you in detail.

ROBOTIC ARM-ASSISTED SURGICAL PROCEDURE FOR IMPLANTATION OF THE KNEE PROSTHESIS

The implantation of a knee endoprosthesis is a successful operation. Nevertheless, up to 15% of patients are not completely satisfied with the result. In order to achieve a high level of satisfaction, a customised bony implantation of the prosthesis should be performed, taking into account the patient’s individual anatomical conditions and ligament tension.

The Mako robotic technique supports the surgeon by combining 3-dimensional bone CT data with intraoperatively recorded soft tissue tension and robotic arm-assisted saw cuts.
